Tucked into the foothills of the Alps, it’s a ridiculously beautiful place that’s turning out some of the most exciting versions of the grape anywhere right now. In Bordeaux, with its maritime climate, Sauvignon Blanc usually shows up more high-toned — green apple, fresh-cut grass, sometimes a little new oak.

In Styria, the fruit leans more generous, even a little tart tropical at times, but still keeps that bright, zippy acidity and a very clear salty/mineral edge. A big reason for that shift is producers like Manfred Tement, who helped put Styrian Sauvignon Blanc on the map. He was a founding member of the STK growers’ association in 1986 — back when there were basically no real quality standards in the region — and made the call early on to focus on Sauvignon Blanc over the more widely planted (and much higher-yielding) Welschriesling. That commitment to quality paid off: in 1991, a German magazine named his wine the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world, which was a pretty wild moment for a small, under-the-radar region like this.

We love it with… Spinach dumplings, goat cheese, scarlett runner bean salad with pumpkin seed oil

Type: White
Vintage: 2024
Size: 750mL
ABV: 12.5%
Grape: Sauvignon Blanc
Region: Südsteiermark, Styria, Austria
Vinification: Certified biodynamic.
