A salty, tangerine dream! Centopassi is the winemaking project of the Libera Terra cooperatives, working with vineyards in Sicily that were confiscated from organized crime and returned to public use. ‘Giato’ comes from grapes grown in the island’s central highlands, where altitude and cooler nights help preserve freshness in the wines. To understand Centopassi, it helps to step back. The broader organization Libera was founded to support civil society against organized crime and to promote a culture of legality and social justice. Led by Don Luigi Ciotti, along with families of mafia victims, the movement gathered over one million signatures to support a landmark Italian law allowing land confiscated from mafias to be repurposed for public and social benefit.
