Desvignes 'Les Pierres' Morgon Javernieres
Domaine Louis-Claude Desvignes
Louis-Claude was bright-eyed and exuberant, almost vibrating with excitement for the wines he made. Though he passed away in 2021, he’d long since handed the estate over to his kids — Claude-Emmanuel (who joined in 2001) and Louis-Benoît (2004) — the eighth generation to work this family’s land in the Morgon cru. These days they bottle 100% of their wines (their dad used to sell about half to négociants) and focus on small, single-parcel expressions of Morgon. If there were an official vineyard classification here, Côte-de-Py would be a premier cru and Javernières a grand cru. This was the most ready-to-drink of their 2024 lineup, though it’ll age beautifully too — juicy, slightly brambly blackberry, turned earth, and sweet herbs.
We love it with… Roasted beet salad, a burger, steak frites
Type: Red
Vintage: 2024
Size: 750mL
ABV: 13%
Grape: Gamay
Region: Morgon, Beaujolais, France
Vinification: Certified organic. Clay soils, 35 year old vines. Javernières is technically part of the Côte du Py, though it is at the very bottom of the hill where the land has flattened out. Its heavy clay soils make it a rather unique geological composition for the area and the sector is prized for its terroir amongst those who work it. Whole-cluster, semi-carbonic maceration. Ferments and ages in concrete. Light filtration at bottling (non-sterile), minimal SO2 additions only after full malolactic fermentation.
